Whisper AI: Revolutionizing Speech Recognition and Transcription

Whisper is an open-source model from OpenAI that uses automated speech recognition (ASR) to turn spoken audio into text. It can handle a wide range of dialects, languages, and background noise because it was trained on a huge dataset of 680,000 hours of multilingual and multimodal audio from the internet. It can translate speech from many languages into English in addition to transcribing audio.

How is it used?

Developers can use the OpenAI API or open-source equivalents found on sites like GitHub to incorporate Whisper into their own apps.

It can be applied to projects like creating voice-activated apps, creating subtitles for films, and transcribing meetings.

#CodeAI001

OpenAI Whisper is a cutting-edge Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology that transcribes spoken words into written text using deep learning. This neural net, released in September 2022, has since become a famous tool in natural language processing, providing unprecedented accuracy and versatility and inspiring a plethora of open-source and commercial applications.

We have created a thorough introduction to the most commonly asked questions regarding Whisper ASR, including how it operates, what it can be used for, important alternatives, and things to take into account when deploying the model for internal projects. We are a speech-to-text provider that has been an expert in Whisper optimizations since its founding.

Whisper: model or system?

OpenAI Whisper might be referred to as a model or a system, depending on the context.

At its core, Whisper is an AI/ML model, specifically an ASR one. The model includes neural network topologies for processing audio input and producing accurate transcriptions. More specifically, Whisper refers to a group of models spanning in size from 39 million to 1.55 billion parameters, with 'bigger' models providing higher accuracy at the tradeoff of longer processing times and higher computing costs.

In a larger sense, Whisper can be called a system because it includes not only the model architecture but also the complete infrastructure and activities that support it.

What can Whisper do?

Whisper's primary goal is to convert speech into text output. It can also translate speech from any of its supported languages into English text. Beyond these basic features, Whisper can be tweaked and fine-tuned for certain activities and capabilities.

For example, Gladia has enhanced Whisper to do additional tasks such as live-streaming transcription and speaker diarization. The model can also be improved to recognize and transcribe additional languages, dialects, and accents. It can also be made more sensitive to specific domains in order to identify industry-specific jargon and terminology. This flexibility allows developers to customize Whisper for their own use cases.

What was it trained on?

OpenAI Whisper was trained on a massive dataset of 680,000 hours of supervised data, making it one of the most complete ASR systems accessible. The dataset, gathered from the internet and academic resources, covers a wide range of topics and acoustic settings, ensuring that Whisper can reliably transcribe speech in a variety of real-world scenarios. Furthermore, 117,000 hours (about ⅓) of labeled pre-training data is multilingual, resulting in checkpoints applicable to 99 languages, including many low-resource languages.

The vast volume of training data contributes to Whisper's capacity to generalize and perform efficiently across a wide range of applications. As a model pre-trained directly on the supervised task of voice recognition, it has a higher average level of accuracy than most other open-source models.

However, due to the generalist nature of its initial training dataset, the model is mathematically more biased towards phrases unrelated to professional audio data, implying that it would normally require some fine-tuning to produce consistently accurate results in business environments.

What precisely is Whisper used for?

  • Whisper is a highly versatile model that can be used to construct a number of voice-enabled apps across sectors and use cases, for example:
  • Using Whisper ASR, create a call center assistant capable of comprehending speech and reacting to consumer requests via voice interactions.
  • Whisper's exact transcription capabilities make it an excellent choice for automating transcription in virtual meetings and note-taking systems that cater to both general audio and specialty verticals such as education, healthcare, journalism, legal, and more.
  • Whisper can be used in media goods to generate podcast transcripts and video captions, especially in live streaming contexts, to improve the viewing experience and accessibility for consumers throughout the world. Together with text-to-speech,
  • Whisper is often used in sales-optimized apps to provide CRM enrichment capabilities with transcripts from customer and prospect meetings.

#CodeAI001

Is there a Whisper API?

In March 2023, OpenAI made the large-v2 model available through our API, which performs quicker than the open-source model and costs $0.006 per minute of transcribing. Whisper API handles typical audio formats such as m4a, mp3, mp4, and wav.

There are also Whisper-based APIs, such as Gladia, which uses a hybrid and upgraded Whisper architecture to provide a wider range of capabilities and features than the official OpenAI API.

What are the limits of Whisper AI?

Vanilla Whisper has various limitations. First, the upload file size and duration are limited to 25MB and 30 seconds, respectively. The model is unable to handle URLs and callbacks. The model, which is powered by a forerunner of the legendary GPT-3 during the decoding phase, is also notorious for causing hallucinations, which result in transcript errors. In terms of features, it offers speech-to-text transcription and translation into English, but no extra audio intelligence functions such as speaker diarization, summary, or others. Real-time transcribing is also not supported.

What are the main alternatives to Whisper ASR?

There are both commercial and open-source options available. Which route you take is determined by your use case, budget, and project needs. You may want to read this article to understand more about the benefits and drawbacks of a Whisper-based API versus OSS.

Some open-source alternatives to Whisper.

Mozilla DeepSpeech is an open-source ASR engine that enables developers to train unique models, enabling flexibility for individual project requirements.

Kaldi: Kaldi is a robust toolbox for voice recognition systems that offers substantial customization options.

Wav2vec is Meta AI's speech recognition system for self-supervised and high-performance speech processing.

Top API alternatives to Whisper Big Tech: Google Cloud Speech-to-Text, Microsoft Azure AI Speech, and AWS Transcribe are examples of multilingual speech-to-text services that include transcription, translation, and custom vocabulary.

Why is Whisper so excellent?

Whisper's outstanding base accuracy and performance in handling a variety of languages make it stand out as a best-in-class ASR system. Differentiating itself from other speech recognition systems is its capacity to adapt to difficult acoustic settings, such as noisy and multilingual audio. By default, it is 92% accurate, with an average word mistake rate of 8.06%, according to the Open ASR Leaderboard.

Whisper is very adaptable and helpful for a variety of applications because it comes in multiple sizes and enables developers to balance computational cost, speed, and accuracy according to the needs of the intended use.

How much time does it take to transcribe using Whisper?

Using a GPU, Whisper AI transcription typically takes 8 to 30 minutes, depending on the nature of audio. If the transcription is done using only CPUs, it takes x2 longer.

Step 5: The optional AGENTS.md file

To help guide AI agents as they operate within your codebase, OpenAI introduces the AGENTS.md file, a unique configuration file for use with the Codex platform. Similar to a README.md, but with instructions for autonomous agents, you can think of it as a development manual for AI teammates.

A task that Codex does on your codebase does the following:

  • Looks for AGENTS.md files that contain the file or files it is changing.
  • Follows the guidelines in those files to format, test, and record its modifications.
  • When several files apply, more buried instructions are given priority (like a cascading config).

What Makes Codex Vital?

Codex is a collaborative agent rather than merely another code-generating tool. It will show you the outputs, citations, and terminal logs for every step you ask it to write, refactor, test, debug, or explain.

Here are a few practical advantages I noticed:

  • The tasks are verifiable and traceable.
  • You can queue more than one modification because Codex operates in parallel.
  • It honors your development configuration, particularly if you have specified up conventions using the AGENTS.md file.
  • It can pass CI tests and conforms to human PR requirements.

It looks like OpenAI recently launched a software engineering intern.

Conclusion

We discovered how Codex can generate pull requests, run tests, and cite its actions using terminal logs and diffs, as well as correct problems, apply feature patches, and explain code logic.

Claude AI Explained: How Anthropic’s Chatbot Is Changing the Future of AI

The American research firm Anthropic created the Claude AI family of large language models (LLMs) and conversational AI chatbots. Based on the ideas of Constitutional AI, which directs its replies to be morally and securely sound, it is intended to be beneficial, truthful, and innocuous. Claude can do a variety of tasks, including as text generation, document summarization, code authoring, image analysis, and multimodal input handling, including text and voice.

#CodeAI001ClaudeAI

The research company Anthropic created the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot and large language model (LLM) family known as Claude AI (Claude). Claude is multimodal and highly skilled in natural language processing (NLP); it can process text, voice, and visual inputs, summarize documents, and produce long-form prose, diagrams, animations, program code, and more.

Claude follows Anthropic's Constitutional AI philosophy, which is a set of moral principles that the company feels sets Claude apart from rival AI models like Google's Gemini and ChatGPT. With an emphasis on AI safety, the tenets of Constitutional AI are intended to direct Claude toward more beneficial replies while steering clear of detrimental practices like AI prejudice.

Transformer models: what are they?

One kind of AI model designed for high-performance natural language processing is called a transformer. In order to statistically forecast the most likely answer to a user question, they employ sophisticated mathematical algorithms. There are four fundamental steps that make up the workflow.

A user inquiry is divided up into tokens by the transformer. A word or a fragment of a word is represented by each token. The cost per token is commonly used to indicate AI model pricing. With a 200,000 tokens1 context window, Claude Pro can handle user requests up to 200,000 tokens long.

Using mathematical procedures, each token is plotted onto a three-dimensional vector space. To help LLMs comprehend user input, tokens that are judged to have more similar meanings are plotted closer together in space. This method yields what is known as a vector embedding.

Self-attention methods are used by transformers like Claude and GPT-4 to self-direct resources on the most pertinent parts of a user query and process context.

To determine the most likely reaction to an input, the model uses probabilistic methods. Instead of truly "knowing" anything, AI models like Claude use sophisticated statistics and their training data to predict the most likely responses to prompts.

#CodeAI001ClaudeAI

Constitutional AI: What is it?

Anthropic, an AI startup, developed Constitutional AI2, a set of safety and ethics guidelines for AI. Anthropic solicited feedback from about 1,000 individuals while creating Claude, asking them to vote on and recommend guidelines for responsible AI use and ethical generative AI operation. Claude's training method was based on the final set of regulations.

The following are the first three Constitutional AI rules:

  • Select the least offensive or risky response.
  • Select the answer that is as trustworthy, truthful, and accurate as you can.
  • Select the answer that most clearly expresses your intentions.

Claude's was trained using reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) and another AI model, whereas other models had their material evaluated by human trainers. The "trainer" model was given the duty of comparing Claude's behavior to Constitutional AI and making the necessary corrections using reinforcement learning from AI feedback (RLAIF).

By automating the behavior-adjustment part of the training process, RLAIF makes promoting moral conduct more affordable and effective. The goal is for Claude to become more adept at avoiding damaging prompts and producing useful responses to prompts that it believes can be answered.

Anthropic AI: Who is it?

Daniela and Dario Amodei, siblings, and other former OpenAI researchers and executives launched the AI business Anthropic in 2021. Google and Amazon have each contributed billions of dollars to the business, while Microsoft still supports OpenAI.

The year before OpenAI published GPT-3.5, in 2021, the Amodei siblings broke off their relationship with the company. Today, the free ChatGPT AI tool is still powered by the same AI model. The Amodei siblings established Anthropic AI and started developing what would eventually be known as Claude AI with other former OpenAI researchers.

The Constitutional AI training procedure, which embodies Anthropic's declared approach to ethical AI, is what makes them unique.

The advantages of Claude over Gemini and ChatGPT

To compare their models to those of their two main rivals, OpenAI and Google, Anthropic AI ran a number of LLM benchmarking experiments prior to Claude 3's release. Claude showed a number of significant advantages in those exams as well as others:

  • A larger context window
  • Excellent results over a wide range of tests
  • No storage of input or output data

A larger context window

Claude can recall and utilize more information while coming up with pertinent responses because he can field prompts with up to 200,000 tokens, or about 350 pages of text. In contrast, users are restricted to 128,000 tokens via GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4o.

Users can develop comprehensive, data-rich prompts thanks to Claude's increased capacity for memory. An AI model's response can be more pertinent the more information there is in the input sequence.

Excellent results over a wide range of tests

Anthropic tested Claude 3 versus Gemini 1.03 and GPT-4, and Claude 3 Opus performed best across all evaluation benchmarks. The Claude family of models performed similarly, while Gemini 1.0 Ultra won four of the six visual tests.

Nevertheless, the testing pool did not include Gemini 1.5 or GPT-4o. When OpenAI unveiled GPT-4o in May 2024, their benchmarking showed that their new flagship model outperformed Claude 3 Opus in five of six tests.

No storage of input or output data

Anthropic's data retention policy5, which states that all user inputs and outputs are erased after 30 days, may be appreciated by users who are worried about data privacy. According to Google's Gemini for Google Cloud data policy6, the firm will not use user input to train its models.

In contrast, OpenAI has the ability to save and utilize user data7 in order to further train its models. Unless the user explicitly deactivates this feature, Google is allowed to keep user data under its Gemini Apps policies8.

The drawbacks of Claude

Although Claude performs well overall when compared to the competition, there are a few flaws that could prevent the general public from accepting it right away.

  • Limited ability to generate images
  • Not using the internet

Limited ability to generate images

Claude's ability to produce images is inferior to that of GPT-4o. Claude is limited in its ability to generate complete images, but it can create interactive flowcharts, entity relationship diagrams, and graphs.

Not using the internet

When responding to user inquiries, GPT-4 can search the internet thanks to Microsoft's interaction with Bing. Even though new training data is frequently added to Claude, its knowledge base is never up to date until Anthropic decides to make Claude publicly available online.

Hope you've understood Claude AI and it's uses. Let's try hands on and share your learnings/experience in Comments section.

Happy Learning :)

Meta AI Explained: How Facebook’s Artificial Intelligence Is Shaping the Future

The artificial intelligence assistant that Meta created for its services, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is called Meta AI. It assists users with tasks like question answering, image generation, and information summarization by utilizing the Llama 3 language model. With possibilities for both basic chat and imaginative image creation, it is integrated into apps rather than available as a stand-alone download and is also accessible on a website.

#CodeAI001MetaAI

Alan Turing posed the question, "Can machines think?" in his well-known work, "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," published in 1950. Advances in machine learning, robotics, computer vision, and natural language processing (NLP) in the late 1990s led to a resurgence in artificial intelligence (AI). Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, emphasized the possibility of introducing AI helpers to billions of people in 2023. AI has become a seamless part of our everyday lives, from Turing's inquiry and the AI renaissance to Zuckerberg's vision.

In that regard, Meta has advanced significantly in the past few months/years.

Meta started integrating updated versions of its AI-powered smart assistant software into its Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger programs in April 2024. In over a dozen nations, including the US, Canada, Singapore, and Australia, Meta will introduce the newest technologies.

Meta AI makes intelligent software ubiquitous, appearing in search bars, news feeds, and friend conversations. Meta AI can help users with a variety of tasks and deliver knowledge. For example, people can find the best vegan enchiladas in Paris or inquire about Saturday night events in Boston.

We may anticipate billions of individuals utilizing AI helpers in practical and significant ways, since 3.19 billion people use at least one of Meta's products every day. Meta AI is making waves because of this.

#CodeAI001MetaAI

How does Meta AI operate?

The idea of meta-learning, which allows AI systems to learn how to learn, is at the core of Meta AI. By gaining meta-knowledge about various tasks and their underlying structures, meta AI may quickly generalize its learning to new and unknown contexts, making it immensely robust and versatile.

However, how is this degree of complexity attained by Meta AI? Its capacity to dynamically create and refine neural architectures is crucial because it enables it to modify its computational resources to meet the unique needs of every activity. Neural architecture search (NAS) is a method that Meta AI uses to search through large design spaces and find high-performing neural network topologies with previously unheard-of efficiency.

Meta AI uses machine learning algorithms to continuously learn and adapt to human behavior, providing more contextually relevant and personalized interactions than typical AI systems that rely on pre-programmed replies.

How is machine learning different from meta-learning?

Machine learning (ML) is the process of using data to teach algorithms to carry out particular tasks. Meta-learning, on the other hand, aims to enhance the learning procedure. In essence, it entails building models that can "learn to learn" across a variety of settings by adapting and improving their performance on new tasks based on experience from prior tasks.

Consider it this way: If machine learning (ML) is similar to teaching students how to answer arithmetic problems by practicing numerous examples, then meta-learning is similar to teaching students how to learn and solve any problem rapidly, even if they have never encountered that particular sort of problem before.

To put it briefly:

Machine learning: Gains knowledge from data to carry out particular tasks.

Meta-learning: Acquires the ability to enhance learning across many tasks, resulting in a more effective and flexible process.

What makes Meta AI significant?

Because it transforms our digital interactions on social media, messaging applications, and search engines, meta AI is essential. The following are some main reasons:

Efficiency: It facilitates task management and rapid information retrieval. It increases users' skills and knowledge.

Personalization: Meta AI makes interactions more efficient and relevant by customizing experiences for each user.

Accessibility: It benefits billions of people globally by democratizing information access and strengthening social ties.

Integration: Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger are just a few of the apps that Meta AI integrates into to make them smarter and easier to use.

Innovation: Meta AI propels advances in domains such as robotics, computer vision, and natural language processing.

In conclusion, Meta AI improves our digital lives by increasing the intelligence, personalization, and accessibility of technology.

What are some of the applications of meta AI?

Meta's app ecosystem now includes its AI-powered assistants. This AI assistant is readily accessible to users through each app's search bar. With the help of this tool, users may add context to their conversations, ask conversational questions, and look up pertinent information online. As a result, it enhances the interest and educational value of digital interactions.

For ranking and suggestions in their newsfeeds, advertisements, and search results, Facebook and Instagram use Meta AI research. OpenAI Explained: Key Features, Applications, and Real-World Uses

The way we use technology is being actively altered by artificial intelligence, or AI. AI technology known as "generative AI" is capable of producing text, images, audio, and more in response to human input, typically in the form of natural language. For instance, if you ask ChatGPT to "rewrite the story of Little Red Riding Hood in 500 words," it will provide you a synopsis based on the information you have entered and your limits.

The AI research firm OpenAI is creating a number of services, and ChatGPT is just one of them. Their goal is to advance AI in ways that, according to them, advance humankind. Continue reading to find out more about OpenAI, its background, and the advantages and disadvantages of its AI products. After that, you might want to enroll in Vanderbilt University's Prompt Engineering Specialization to learn more about how to get the most out of ChatGPT.

#CodeAI001OpenAI

The goal of OpenAI, an AI research and deployment firm established in 2015, is to guarantee that artificial general intelligence (AGI) serves the interests of all people. The company, which has a non-profit foundation in charge of a for-profit subsidiary, is well-known for creating cutting-edge AI models like the GPT series and products like ChatGPT. The business is a pioneer in artificial intelligence, concentrating on research in fields like deep learning and natural language processing while simultaneously stressing safety and moral issues.

The declared objective of OpenAI is to develop AGI in a way that is both safe and advantageous to all people. Originally a non-profit, it eventually raised money by forming OpenAI Global, LLC, a for-profit subsidiary, but it still maintains control. A plan to restructure the capped-profit organization into a public benefit company with the non-profit pursuing independent projects was put out in late 2024.

The business carries out research in several different areas of artificial intelligence. Its GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) models and ChatGPT, a conversational AI, have garnered a great deal of public attention.

New items like the Sora video generation software and more sophisticated models like GPT-5 have been released recently. Through its OpenAI Academy, the business is currently working on a number of projects to encourage AI literacy and teamwork, in addition to investigating new technology.

In 2015, OpenAI was established with the goal of creating AI and machine learning tools for a range of applications. It began by providing an open-source toolbox for creating algorithms for reinforcement learning (OpenAI Gym), which led it to concentrate on AI research for broader applications.

The Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) concept was introduced by OpenAI in 2018. It is a neural network (a machine learning model) that mimics the human brain and is taught using data sets. DALL-E, an image version of ChatGPT that allows users to instruct the generative AI model to generate graphics, was released in 2021. Since its November 2022 release, ChatGPT has grown to become the most widely used generative AI and chatbot tool, capable of creating anything from resumes to survey questions to chatbot responses.

To enhance its large language models' (LLMs') performance, OpenAI keeps them updated. The firm has a large selection of GPT models as of Marc 2025.

OpenAI releases and products

From writing text to producing films and even transcribing audio recordings, large language models can be employed for a variety of activities. Consequently, OpenAI offers a wide range of products, including the following:

ChatGPT: is an AI chatbot that responds to user inquiries and instructions by producing text. It mimics the experience of conversing and listening to a human and has been trained on big data sets.

DALL-E 3: This platform generates graphics as specified by analyzing user-inputted prompts and descriptions. "Paint a cat in Surrealist style," for instance.

Codex: For code, Codex is similar to ChatGPT. To make coding easier for engineers, it has been trained on a vast amount of code in many programming languages.

Whisper: Whisper is an autonomous speech recognition program that can translate and transcribe speech after being trained on audio recordings in dozens of languages.

Scholar: A program that offers financial aid and support to students and researchers working on AI-related initiatives.

OpenAI Gym is a toolset that offers a starting point for creating algorithms for reinforcement learning.

OpenAI API: The developer platform is a collection of services that facilitates the creation and implementation of AI applications, including the aforementioned services.

The Generative AI Assistants Specialization at Vanderbilt University will teach you how to train your own AI assistant to fulfill certain tasks in your field, whether they be scientific, legal, logistical, or something else entirely.

The cutting-edge technology known as generative AI has many advantages for both businesses and consumers, but it also has some risks. Consequently, both the general people and IT experts have praised and criticized OpenAI. Below is a summary of some of the advantages and disadvantages of OpenAI products.

When properly utilized, OpenAI technologies like ChatGPT can assist us in carrying out specific AI-driven tasks in our day-to-day work life with precision and effectiveness.

OpenAI has come under fire for abandoning its "non-profit" designation in 2019. According to the research it had gathered as a non-profit, this gave individuals the impression that they were taking part in the race to create the most cutting-edge technology and use it to make money.

Officials in the federal government are bringing legal action against the legality of sourcing data and copyrighted content due to the hazards associated with OpenAI's services. The original works of artists and writers have been safeguarded.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission launched an inquiry into Altman in February to find out if the CEO had deceived investors during the brief reorganization in late 2023. Elon Musk launched a lawsuit against OpenAI that same month, claiming that the business had engaged in anticompetitive behavior during its conversion to for-profit status and that it had abandoned its initial objective in favor of profit.

The struggle between Musk and Altman continued when, a few weeks later, Musk and a group of investors bid $97.4 billion to acquire control of OpenAI. Formally presented in February, the request was swiftly and publicly rejected by OpenAI's board. Around the same time, OpenAI closed one of the biggest private funding rounds in history, a $40 billion round sponsored by SoftBank, which valued the company at over $300 billion.
