Microsoft Copilot is a personal and professional AI-powered assistant that can write code, generate text and graphics, answer queries, summarize data, and help with a variety of activities in Microsoft 365 apps. It comes in three different versions: a free version for Windows and the web, a premium Copilot Pro membership, and an add-on for Microsoft 365 apps that provides more in-depth data and work content integration.
The GPT-5 model, OpenAI's most recent generative AI model, is now being used by Copilot Chat as its main supporting LLM. By using the Try GPT-5 button located in the upper right corner of Copilot Chat, users can test GPT-5 using their Copilot prompts. When utilizing GPT-5 in Copilot Chat, Copilot selects the optimal model—including GPT-5—to produce a response with improved performance, accuracy, and complexity. Regardless of whether users have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license or not, the Try GPT-5 button will show up in Copilot Chat. No changes are made to your security, privacy, or compliance settings by this model update.
An AI-powered product called Microsoft 365 Copilot assists you with your work-related duties. When users input a prompt into Copilot, Copilot generates information based on artificial intelligence. Microsoft Copilot and its integration with other apps:
Copilot for Microsoft 365 integrates with the Microsoft 365 productivity suite, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and other programs that you use on a daily basis. Among these is Copilot Vision, which has the ability to "see" and deliver details on what is on your Windows screen or what is in your mobile app's camera view. Your research notes can be saved and arranged using Copilot Pages, which are AI-powered documents. For tasks like ordering flowers or booking reservations, Copilot Actions defers responsibility to outside web services. Copilot Actions can be tailored by business users to automate repetitive operations specific to their offerings.
Copilot Appearance is an intriguing new visual update that provides an AI avatar that responds to your dialogues. Some customers in the US, UK, and Canada are beginning to see it in the web version. Another new feature is Copilot Memory, which allows you to teach the AI to tailor responses according to your past interactions and interests. Additionally, Copilot Podcasts may produce a chat show on any topic you choose. Interfaces and back-end technology are also always changing. For instance, Copilot switched to GPT-4o for both text and image production.
While Copilot+ PCs can use NPUs to do some AI processing locally, the majority of Copilot's capabilities still need a connection to Microsoft's cloud. The Copilot+ AI features are a distinct set of capabilities from the normal Copilot service that I talk about here, which is confusing.
